An epic series that improves on its creator’s previous works but is unfairly flying under the radar on Netflix.

Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish style from quality. There are filmmakers whose fans will support their work, no matter how disastrous, simply because they maintain their unique style and personality. We’ve seen this in recent years with directors like Tim Burton, whose career has been marked by both brilliant successes and stylistic failures. Another great example of this is Zack Snyder. Ever since Snyder made his mark with 300, he’s gathered a dedicated fanbase who adore his visual style, even though many of his films have been far from successful.

Snyder also built a loyal following due to his controversial exit from DC projects and the eventual release of the “Snyder Cut.” This movement created a deep, almost sports-like loyalty among his fans. There’s no doubt that the director of 300 has demonstrated talent and style, especially in adapting graphic novels and video games into violent, epic spectacles, which is his forte.

However, with Rebel Moon, he showed that creating his own version of Star Wars from scratch is no easy feat. And no, the extended versions (which just add more nudity and longer battle scenes) didn’t fix the issues. Still, while Rebel Moon might be hard to recommend, Snyder’s partnership with Netflix (which he wholeheartedly defends, as you can see in the video above) isn’t a total loss. No, we’re not here to talk about Army of the Dead, which had its charm.

On September 19, Snyder released a new series on Netflix, and since it’s animated, it seems to have slipped under almost everyone’s radar. It’s frustrating how animation is often treated as a second-class product. In fact, someone with Snyder’s creative vision should thrive in this medium. His aesthetic, the spectacular set pieces, violence, and sex… it’s all there in Twilight of the Gods, a series that brings Snyder back to the atmosphere and tone reminiscent of 300.

Stars like Sylvia Hoeks, Lauren Cohan, Jessica Henwick, Jamie Chung, Kristofer Hivju, and Pilou Asbæk lend their voices to this animated series, whose first season consists of eight episodes, each about 30 minutes long. The show tells an epic tale of revenge with elements of fantasy and mythology, centered around a Viking village and a bride whose white wedding gown soon turns red with blood.

The protagonist embarks on a vengeful mission, accompanied by a unique cast of characters, and along the way, there’s plenty of action to thrill fans. This time, however, we’re spared many of Snyder’s usual flaws. Twilight of the Gods is perfect for Zack Snyder fans, but even if you’re not one, you’ll probably still enjoy it.
