OPPO Watch X Review: The Smartwatch with Wear OS We’ve Been Waiting For

  • Battery life is no longer a major issue, but don’t expect to go a full week without charging it.
  • The performance and Wear OS functionality are impressive.

In a market flooded with smartwatches that mostly function as classic timepieces, step counters, and notification displays, the OPPO Watch X stands out with a combination of interesting design and high-end features powered by Wear OS.

After testing it on Xataka, the OPPO Watch X has positioned itself remarkably well with an irresistible combination of affordability and a battery life that few smartwatches at this level can boast about. This is all without sacrificing the standard features you’d expect from other Wear OS smartwatches in a similar price range.

One Comfortable Size

Oppo has taken a bold step with a smartwatch running Wear OS. The OPPO Watch X is a solid, substantial timepiece, only available in one size, which might limit its appeal.

Physically, the OPPO Watch X is a large watch (46mm face), meaning it may not sit as comfortably on smaller wrists. It stands out both visually and physically, especially on slimmer wrists. However, its weight is surprisingly light, around 80 grams (with the watch alone weighing 40 grams), making it a very comfortable device for daily wear—even overnight, something unusual for smartwatches.

Despite initial doubts about the size, after wearing it for several weeks, I found it comfortable, even while sleeping. This is a major advantage.

The OPPO Watch X may be large and lacks a smaller version, but it is surprisingly comfortable to wear, even overnight.

High-Quality Build

Even with a price tag of 300 euros, the watch gives off a premium vibe, both visually and to the touch, with attention to detail. The case is made of polycarbonate and fiberglass, while the bezel and buckle are stainless steel, and the band is made from fluororubber. The screen is protected by 2.5D sapphire glass, which remained intact after weeks of testing.

It’s also durable, with IP68 protection against water and dust, and it can withstand extreme temperatures (-20°C to 55°C) and pressures up to 5 ATM (50 meters). Unless you frequently dive or climb to extreme heights, this watch should suit most activities.

To control the watch, there are only two buttons: a crown at the top and a secondary button. Both are customizable, allowing you to assign up to four shortcuts. By default, pressing the crown opens the main menu, while the lower button quickly launches the activity log.

Large AMOLED Display

The OPPO Watch X features a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 466×466 pixels (326 ppi). The maximum brightness is 600 nits, adequate for most situations, although the screen may struggle in direct sunlight during outdoor activities.

The screen is responsive, with perfect gesture recognition. Wear OS has matured, making the interface effective and easy to use. The screen is also resistant to fingerprints and dirt.

Performance with Wear OS

Powered by the Snapdragon W5 Gen1 and a secondary BES2700 processor for efficiency, the OPPO Watch X delivers a smooth performance. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, enough for most smartwatch tasks.

Running Wear OS 4, the OPPO Watch X offers independence from your phone for tasks like messaging and notifications. The smartwatch is a great tool for managing notifications, responding to messages, playing music, and navigating with Google Maps.

A Solid Fitness Companion

As a fitness watch, the OPPO Watch X supports over 100 workout modes, from badminton to strength training. It’s compatible with third-party apps like Strava and MyFitnessPal, making it versatile for most users. For activities like running or tennis, it provides detailed metrics like foot contact time and running pace.

The watch also offers automatic detection for activities like running, walking, swimming, and cycling. It accurately tracks routes via GPS and monitors heart rate during exercise and rest.

The health and fitness features are complemented by measurements like step count, oxygen saturation, and stress levels. However, the default OHealth app for Android is somewhat basic compared to other Wear OS devices.

Battery Life: A Highlight

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the OPPO Watch X is its battery life. With a 500 mAh battery, it outperforms other smartwatches in its category. In our tests, we achieved nearly a full work week of use by managing sensor and screen usage.

Under more intense use, the watch can last two full days, including sleep tracking and heart rate monitoring.

Charging is also fast, with the battery reaching nearly 50% in just 15 minutes. The charging adapter uses a USB-C cable, which is a smart choice for portability.

Conclusion

The OPPO Watch X proves that Wear OS smartwatches are now a mature and highly recommended product. With a powerful interior, smooth Wear OS experience, and impressive battery life, it’s an excellent choice for those in the market for a smartwatch.
